I have lived in Russia for ten years now and of course I’ve seen my fair share of Moscow’s glorious summer weather, but 2009 will be the first year that I will actually spend the whole summer in the capital. Living full-time in the city that never sleeps is always exciting - every season has a million and one things to offer, but when the sun is out there’s no other place I’d rather be. When I asked my friends recently what they would like to see as a feature in our next issue, the unanimous response was that we had to delve deeper into Moscow’s park life – Muscovites love to wind down and enjoy the simpler things in life. Here’s the recipe we came up with for a relaxed afternoon; prepare a huge picnic, get some beers (and don’t forget to keep an eye out for the cops if you are drinking your own shop-bought booze), gather your friends together and head down to one of the many parks mentioned in our feature. Step two, find a nice place on the grass in the sun and get your chops round a good piece of Russian shashlik (shish kebab). Then, step three switch off your work brain and take it easy.
